Defiant Update: Legion M’s most ambitious project reaches a new milestone!

If you’ve been following Legion M you know that one of our biggest projects in development is Defiant: The Story of Robert Smalls. It’s a bold and ambitious take on a bold and ambitious (and entirely true!) story. We’ve been talking with folks about this project for years now, and we know from the overwhelming response that it’s a story people want to see on the big screen. We’re doing everything we can to make that happen.

Today marks the anniversary of a pivotal moment in the story of Robert Smalls. On this day in 1862, just before dawn, Smalls led a courageous crew of enslaved men and women to pull off one of the most audacious heists in history. They “confiscated” a 140 foot Confederate gunship, embarking on a daring journey to freedom that changed not just their own lives, but the future of a nation.

Today also marks a pivotal moment in our effort to bring this story to the big screen. We’ve assembled an amazing team, led by screenwriter Rob Edwards (The Princess and the Frog, Treasure Planet, etc…) and the talented team at Stranger Comics to tell the story of Robert Smalls in graphic novel form. When complete, the series will consist of 3 graphic novels comprised of 4 comic books each (for a total of 12 comic books). This will form the underlying IP for the eventual film.

We are thrilled to announce that the first of these comic books has just been released to the public.
