INSIDER #057

It was great to see so many members of the Legion at Los Angeles Comic Con earlier this month! We had three panels, including a main stage Q&A with William Shatner. We were also excited to host the team from Lost Odyssey Live at our booth, along with a Nandor Fodor Photo Op and VIP’s signing autographs. Thanks to everyone who attended!

NEWS FROM AROUND THE LEGION

Nandor Fodor and the Talking Mongoose
The news broke recently on Deadline that Neil Gaiman, the Hugo award-winning author whose books and graphic novels have been adapted into series including Good Omens (Amazon), The Sandman (Netflix), and American Gods (Starz), has been cast as the voice of “Gef” the talking mongoose. We’re looking forward to hearing Gaiman’s take on the mythic mongoose!

Defiant
We’re also excited to officially welcome screenwriter Rob Edwards (The Princess and the Frog, Treasure Planet) to the DEFIANT team. Rob has been brought on board to write a graphic novel adaptation of this feature film in development, which details the incredible true story of Civil War hero Captain Robert Smalls. Rob Edwards’ prolific writing career spans both features and TV. He has written projects for Showtime, Sony, Mofac, and Marvel Studios, consulted on Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and Frozen, and written/produced for iconic television shows including The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, and In Living Color. We had an engrossing panel discussion at Los Angeles Comic Con with Rob, as well as DEFIANT producer Marvin Jones (Black Lightning) and Legion M execs Chris Cooper & David Baxter about the challenges and process involved in adapting Robert Smalls' story to both a graphic novel and film.

In Round 9 News…
We’ve flown past the $1,000,000 mark and surpassed 5,000 investments. We couldn’t be more thrilled at how the Legion is growing! If you are interested in getting in on the current round (or haven’t invested yet and you’d like to), you can get all the details here!

DEVELOPMENT DIARIES

You Can Call Me Bill
Paul, Jeff, and David shared the main stage at the Los Angeles Comic Con with the one and only William Shatner where they discussed Legion M’s upcoming documentary and Bill answered questions from the fans in the audience. We were able to play a sneak peek from the doc (which is currently in post production) from director Alexandre O. Philippe which was followed by thunderous applause from the crowd. During the autograph session following the panel, many people came up to Bill and let him know just how much they were looking forward to seeing the documentary.

Girl With No Name
We had a great meeting with our fellow producer Laura Ivey and went through some “out of the box” ideas for casting of “The Uncle” and main antagonist. We also talked about bringing in an expert for the music side of the film.

My Dead Friend Zoe
Casting is ramping up for MDFZ with a focus on the role of Merit’s grandfather Dale, who is a veteran of Vietnam. There are a number of very familiar and respected names on the list for casting, so keep your fingers crossed for us as we reach out to their representatives.

Tobor: Family Destroyer
Legion M & the creators of TOBOR (our animated sci-fi comedy show in development) met with a high-level executive this week to discuss the future of the project. We hope to begin clearing the pitch in January 2023 and pitching to buyers as early as February.

NOTE: “development" generally refers to the earliest stages of the content production cycle, when production companies invest time, money, and “sweat equity” to create, develop, package, and sell movies, TV series and other entertainment projects. There are millions of scripts and ideas in Hollywood, and while only a very small percentage get made, the potential value of a successful project can be quite large. Every project we develop is a risk we take in the hopes of launching a new movie, series, or franchise. That said, development is one of the most speculative stages in the entertainment business, and the odds of any given project making it to market, to production, or to the screen, are ultimately very low.
