This Is Not Financial Advice - Tribeca Recap

June 10th marked the Tribeca premiere of one of Legion M’s upcoming releases—the feature documentary, This is Not Financial Advice. Legion M is an executive producer and equity investor in the film, which means that if you are a Legion M investor you have a stake in it (and if you aren’t an investor, you should join us now!)

The premiere went swimmingly. Legion M co-founder and CEO Paul Scanlan was in attendance, and because of our role in producing the film we were able to bring a couple dozen Legion M investors along to the premiere and afterparty.

The audience reaction was great and the initial reviews have been strong:

A thought-provoking masterpiece. The best documentary at Tribeca.”
Taylor Lorenz (The Washington Post)

A balanced, diverse perspective into the world of retail trading, sprinkled with insightful commentary from financial analysts.
Hiranmayi Srinivasan (Investopedia)

A testament to the populism coming for capitalism. It is no longer for the elite, the world of finance democratized for all those who want to give it their best shot.
Stephanie Archer (Film Inquiry)

A period piece for this extraordinary era in money.

If you aren’t familiar with the premise of This Is Not Financial Advice, the clip below from the Q&A at Tribeca serves as a great introduction. There’s no spoilers in the clip, but directors Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci explain what led them to make the movie:

What Legion M loves about this documentary is the honest, open, and even-handed approach it takes to exploring the new frontiers of retail investing. For previous generations, the world of investing was a walled garden that few understood or had access to. Today, even those with no financial training can buy and sell from the palm of their hand. Asset classes have expanded from stocks and bonds to include everything from crypto and the metaverse to fractional shares of classic Jordans. Brokers—the traditional source of guidance for non-professional investors—have been replaced by TikTok influencers, subreddits, and all the information, misinformation and manipulation that lurks on the internet.

This democratization of finance has been transformative, providing means for wealth generation to those who have never had access before. But in a world where one can “invest” in just about anything, how do you separate the signal from the noise, opportunities from scams, and reality from hype?

The new documentary, This is Not Financial Advice —produced with the help of Legion M and its 40,000+ shareholders—examines these questions by allowing the viewer to "come along for the ride" with a unique and entertaining assortment of investors using wildly different approaches to chase their fortunes. From the "Dogecoin Millionaire" who made (and lost) millions by investing his life's savings in a joke cryptocurrency to a TikTok influencer striving to demystify finance for teenage girls, This is Not Financial Advice is a wildly entertaining movie that also serves as a thoughtful examination of what it means to be an "investor" in 2023.

Love it or hate it, the new frontiers of finance are upon us, and This is Not Financial Advice does a masterful job of creating the sort of conversations needed to navigate them. For Legion M—a company whose founding premise is rooted in the new frontier of equity crowdfunding—we couldn’t be more proud to be a part of this film and the important conversations it sparks.

Please stay tuned for more information. Release plans are not available yet, but we’ll provide updates as soon as we’ve got ‘em!
