A Book Recommendation We’re Unusually Excited About
Dear Legion M Community,
Every once in a while, a book comes along that changes how people think.
Back in 2011, Legion M friend and advisor Eric Ries released a book called The Lean Startup and it became one of those books. It sold millions of copies and helped catalyze a fundamental shift in how products, companies, and ideas get built by replacing rigid planning with experimentation, learning, and a relentless focus on creating real value.
Ever heard of the Minimum Viable Product (MVP)? You can thank Eric for helping bring that concept into the mainstream.
The exciting news is that Eric has a new book coming out called Incorruptible, and it’s awesome.
Through our relationship with Eric, we were fortunate to get early access to the manuscript and even provide some feedback along the way. I’ve read it and I’ll say this…I think and genuinely hope that Eric is onto something.
At its heart, the book challenges an assumption that too many people have quietly and unnecessarily accepted…that as mission driven organizations scale, compromise is inevitable and that purpose eventually gets sacrificed in service of profit.
Eric argues something different.
He makes the case that corruption is not the inevitable outcome of growth and that purpose and success are not opposing forces. In fact, when done right, they reinforce one another.
At Legion M, our purpose is not separate from our business model. It is the engine behind it. That is why Eric’s message resonates so deeply with us.
One of the reasons we’ve enjoyed getting to know Eric over the years is that he saw something in Legion M that felt familiar. We share the belief that purpose is not a constraint on growth but rather a force multiplier.
If Incorruptible has even half the impact on how organizations are built and led that The Lean Startup had on how things get made, I genuinely believe we’ll all be better off.
If you are interested in reading it yourself, we have some autographed copies available in the store. You can also get it on Amazon/Audible/Kindle or anywhere you buy books normally.
Would love to hear what you think once you’ve had a chance to read it.
Onward and Upward,
-Paul, Jeff, and the Legion M Team
