Film Scout is one of the platforms we use to give our community a seat at the table in our film acquisition process. Like many other big studios and distributors, we’re going to Sundance with the goal of acquiring the rights to a film. Typically, this is the sort of decision that is made by a couple of executives based on gut feel and intuition. We think there’s a better way.

HARNESSING THE IMMEASURABLE POWER OF FANS

When you use the Film Scout platform, your votes — along with those of thousands of other film scouts around the world — are used to give Legion M invaluable data on the movies that real fans want to see. We’re leveraging the “wisdom of the crowd”, (not to mention the passion, experience and insight of the greatest fan community on the planet!) to make better decisions for our company and the benefit of all our shareholders!

Last year, Legion M fans around the world (and on the ground in Park City) helped us find Memory: The Origins of Alien, a documentary exploring the untold backstory of Ridley Scott’s Alien and the impact it still has today, 40 years after it’s original release. Based on data from Film Scout, Legion M partnered with Screen Media to purchase the North American distribution rights for the film, which we released in theaters and on-demand in October. Today the film, described by RogerEbert.com as “one of the best documentaries about a single film that I've seen“ is Certified Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and available everywhere on demand.

YOUR ROLE AS A SCOUT

Sound like fun? If you’d like to try your hand at being a film scout, we formally invite you to join the Legion M Scout team for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival! All you need to do is download the app, which is available on iOS and Android. Using the app, you’ll be asked to share your PERSONAL opinions about each film. This information is important, as the opinions of our community factor heavily into every decision we make (please see the article How Does Legion M Select Projects). There’s no right or wrong answer here — everyone is entitled to their own opinion, and each is as valid as the next. This is art after all — how boring would it be if we all liked the same thing!?!

COMPETE TO BECOME AN ELITE SCOUT

In addition to sharing your personal opinions, the Film Scout app will also ask you to make predictions about what OTHER fans will think about each film. And while there is no right or wrong answer when it comes to your opinions, your predictions WILL be graded! At the end of the festival, we’ll release a leaderboard which shows how good a job you did at predicting the opinions of others. The top few % of our Sundance Film Scouts will be invited to join the Legion M ELITE SCOUT program, which provides even more opportunities to help us scout films.
