Shareholder Poll: Should Legion M be doing more theatrical events?

As a member of the Legion M community, we’d love to get your feedback on the prospect of Legion M programming theatrical events, including the possibility of a monthly “Movie Club”.

BACKGROUND

Earlier this year Legion M partnered with Warner Brothers and Fathom Events for the 20th anniversary of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. The film was rereleased for one-night-only at over 1,000 theaters across the US and Canada.

The deal was a partnership between Fathom, Warner Brothers, and Legion M. Under this deal, Legion M was responsible for three things:

  • Contributing to the cost of getting the film into theaters

  • Sourcing the "bonus content" (via Lost Odyssey) that played before the film

  • Marketing and promoting the release, both within the Legion M community and to the rest of the world

In exchange, Legion M received a % of all ticket sales.

While there was risk involved for Legion M (i.e. if the movie had flopped we could have lost both time and money we invested in the project), the event was very successful. The film out-grossed many new releases on the night it played – a remarkable feat for a 20-year-old movie that was also available for free to HBO Max subscribers. There was so much demand that Fathom extended the release from 1 night to a full week.

Ultimately, it was a great experience for Legion M – a fun event that resulted in substantial (six-figure) revenue for the company.

Have fun. Make cool stuff happen. Earn Money. What else can we hope to do?

We're interested in getting feedback from our community. Should Legion M attempt more events like this? Or should we focus on other things? How interested are you in theatrical releases? Would you be interested in the idea of a monthly movie club?

We’ve got ideas, but we want to hear what you think. This is your company after all...we work for you!
